Bomback previously wrote Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer and Len Wiseman's Total Recall remake.
The Wolverine 2 sees Hugh Jackman's titular character searching for clues to his past in the Japanese underground, Variety reports.
Director James Mangold was formerly working from Christopher McQuarrie's screenplay.
Production on the film has been pushed back until next year because Jackman has signed on to Tom Hooper's adaptation of Les Miserables.
The Wolverine sequel had already suffered problems with securing shooting locations, with the initial plan to delay production until October this year.
Bomback has previously worked with Jackman on the 2008 thriller Deception.
Knight and Day director Mangold stepped in after Black Swan's Darren Aronofsky abandoned the production.
