The Ocean's Eleven director clarified his plans while promoting his new film Contagion at the Venice Film Festival this weekend.
"It's less dramatic than it sounds," Soderbergh said, according to BBC News. "It's just a sabbatical."
"I feel I need to recalibrate, so I can discover something new."
Soderbergh has yet to give any indication how long his break from the film industry will last.
The director is currently working on several new projects, including a Liberace biopic starring Michael Douglas and a film adaptation of '60s spy series The Man From U.N.C.L.E..
Contagion, which boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Winslet, is in contention for the Venice Film Festival's prestigious Golden Lion award.
