"It is impossible, once you start thinking about it, to stop thinking about it," Soderbergh said at a news conference on Saturday. "I'm washing my hands a little bit more."

He continued: "But since I showed up in Venice I have been shaking hands a lot. I was on an airplane, which is one of the worst places you can be. This is just the world we live in."

Contagion centres on a the spread of a deadly disease. It stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law. The film is in contention for the Venice Film Festival's prestigious Golden Lion award.

Soderbergh recently denied rumours that he plans to retire, saying that he will simply be taking a break from the film industry.
