The Ward director is known for his horror classics such as The Thing, Escape from New York, Assault on Precinct 13 and Halloween.
He told Fangoria: "I'm right now working on a little gothic Western, we'll see if we can get it set up.
"I got into this business to make a Western. And I got typecast as a horror director after Halloween. My dream was to have a career in directing movies and so I went where they wanted me to go."
Carpenter told Digital Spy earlier this year that the filmmaking process had not changed substantially before he took a career break in 2001 after Ghosts from Mars.
He said: "The process of making a film is basically the same. You have to get up early. You need a lot of coffee and good shoes.
"It's interior or exterior. It's day or night. And there's a bunch of actors standing around waiting to be told what to do. That never changes."
Carpenter recently claimed that he had not been asked to direct the planned prequel to his alien horror classic The Thing.
