The Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy actor revealed his thoughts on the tendency to create watered-down material at a panel for the movie at this year's Venice Film Festival, insisting that the John le Carré adaptation requires audiences to put more thought into events on screen.
"I do think there is a tendency to underestimate audiences. I do think there is an appetite to be stretched," Firth explained.
"I do think people want to hear language at its best on the screen. I'm optimistic about it having an enormous audience."
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy centres on a veteran secret agent (Gary Oldman) who is pulled out of retirement to find a Soviet spy located in MI6's ranks.
The film also stars Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mark Strong.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy opens in UK cinemas on September 16 and November 18 in the US.
