Oscar-nominee Morgan told Digital Spy that the romantic drama, which stars Antony Hopkins, Jude Law and Rachel Weisz, focuses on people rather than spectacle.
"This is a pet project insofar as it came completely from the heart and it's clearly not motivated by financial greed - otherwise there'd be someone in a leotard in it," he said.
"This is a film without special effects, it's a human character story."
The Constant Gardener director Fernando Meirelles signed up to make the movie after his Janis Joplin biopic, which had Amy Adams lined up to play the musician, fell through.
"Even with a great actress and Fernando attached that film didn't get off the ground for one reason or another," Morgan explained. "He was suddenly free and he jumped into this, which was lovely."
The BFI London Film Festival will run from October 12 to October 27.
