The Vanilla Sky star confessed that he is still working on developing the character for the forthcoming superhero reboot.
"I'm nervous," Shannon told MTV News. "I'm still getting my foot into the pool. I just started working on it."
The 37-year-old went on to say that he will not imitate Terence Stamp's performance in 1980 film Superman II.
"I'm not going to impersonate Terence Stamp. I'm not going to have a British accent or anything," Shannon insisted. "All I can say is it's very well written and there's a lot of great opportunities to reinvent it for myself.
"The challenge is for me to do that. There's nothing holding me back. I think they're counting on me to give my interpretation. I'll do the best I can."
In addition to Shannon, Superman: Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne.
In August, Cavill revealed that he is consuming 5,000 calories a day in order to get into shape to play Superman.
