The movie, to be written and directed by Roman Coppola, will mark Sheen's first film since his exit from Two and a Half Men earlier this year.
Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III follows a successful graphic designer whose career takes a nosedive when his girlfriend decides to leave him, Variety reports.
Coppola's previous work includes 2001's CQ and assistant direction on Love Actually, The Darjeeling Limited and The Life Aquatic.
The director has also worked on his sister Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette and The Virgin Suicides.
He is best known for his music video work for bands including Green Day, Daft Punk and Wyclef Jean.
Sheen, who turned 46 earlier this week, recently admitted that he wanted to forget about last year's troubles.
Schwartzman is currently attached to Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom, which will co-star Bruce Willis, Ed Norton and Anderson regular Tilda Swinton.
