The Academy Award-winning actress told MTV that her role as Miranda Tate was not inspired by any existing characters from DC Comics' Batman line.
Cotillard was previously rumoured to have been cast as Talia al Ghul in the Christopher Nolan sequel, despite Warner Bros officially announcing that she is to portray Tate.
Tate has been described as a Wayne Enterprises board member who tries to help Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic work.
Bale and Cotillard are part of an all-star cast featuring Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman.
The Dark Knight Rises arrives in theatres on July 20, 2012.
