Steve McQueen's critically acclaimed drama Shame has been picked up for US distribution by Fox Searchlight.

The film, which stars X-Men: First Class villain Michael Fassbender as a sex addict, premiered earlier this month at the Venice Film Festival to a positive critical reception.

The actor and director previously worked together on the 2008 drama Hunger, about the 1981 Irish hunger strikes.

Never Let Me Go star Carey Mulligan portrays Fassbender's troubled younger sister in the film.

Fassbender says he explored the world of internet pornography in preparation for the role, and has criticised the medical industry for failing to recognise sex addiction as an official illness.

Shame is now expected to open in the US later this year.
