Robertson, whose career spanned 50 years, was best known for portraying Uncle Ben in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film trilogy.
According to BBC News, the actor died of natural causes earlier this week, one day after his 88th birthday.
"My father was a loving father, devoted friend, dedicated professional, and honourable man," Robertson's daughter Stephanie Saunders said, in a statement published by The AP. "He stood by his family, friends, and colleagues through good times and bad. We will all miss him terrible."
Robertson also won an Academy Award for 'Best Actor' in 1968 for his role in Ralph Nelson's Charly.
The role of Uncle Ben will be played by Martin Sheen in Marc Webb's forthcoming reboot The Amazing Spider-Man.
