Denzel Washington will lead the film's cast, portraying an alcoholic airline pilot called Whip.
The story details Whip's successful attempt to safely land a damaged aircraft without heavy casualties, and his subsequent guilt over what caused the plane to crash.
Flight, written by John Gatins, will be Zemeckis's first live-action film since the 2000 survival drama Cast Away starring Tom Hanks.
For the past decade, Zemeckis has focused mainly on motion-capture projects like The Polar Express and Beowulf.
The director was also recently attached to direct historical monster movie Here There Be Monsters.
Flight is due to begin filming in Atlanta, Georgia, this October.
