According to the Daily Mail, the director is keen for Bonham Carter to play Madame Thenardier in his adaptation of the popular musical.
Earlier this weekend, it was confirmed that Russell Crowe had agreed to take on the role of police inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman will play ex-convict Jean Valjean.
Les Misérables is being adapted for the screen by Gladiator screenwriter William Nicholson.
Bonham Carter last worked with Hooper on the Academy Award-winning film The King's Speech.
Les Misérables is expected to begin filming early next year for release in cinemas on December 7, 2012.
