Conversion of the 1986 film, which starred Tom Cruise and was directed by Tony Scott, will be conducted by Legend3D, The Hollywood Reporter says.
Legend3D CEO Rob Hummel said: "As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I know they want to get Tony Scott's approval before they go forward.
"I think Top Gun lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight. You can have fun with 3D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen."
He added: "We think there is great potential for catalogue titles in 3D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense."
Hummel reportedly explained that Legend3D has a revenue-sharing agreement with Paramount, with his company funding the conversion process for the film.
A four-minute preview featuring a 3D version of the film's 'Danger Zone' sequence was shown today at Amsterdam's International Broadcasting Convention.
A Blu-ray special edition of Top Gun was released last month to mark the 25th anniversary of the film.
Scott last year revealed plans for a Top Gun sequel, but there have been conflicting reports about Cruise's possible involvement in the project.
