The director has started pre-production on the film already, according to Vulture.
A script for the follow-up will also be completed this month, which could mean studio Paramount Pictures is planning to release the movie next year.
Paramount reportedly pushed the date back from summer 2012 in order to give the Star Trek creative team more time to work on the project.
In August, the Super 8 director claimed that there was no director or script set for the eagerly-awaited film.
Abrams said that he wanted to put the story in place before considering location and special effects.
He explained: "Once you say, 'We're ready to go, but we don't have a finished script yet', or, 'I'm directing the thing and here's the release date, but we don't have a finished script', what starts to happen is that you're suddenly in production on a movie where you're thinking, 'Oh my God, we weren't really ready!'"
