The Crazy, Stupid, Love actor stars as an unnamed stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver in Nicholas Winding Refn's violent action-thriller, and said that he was immediately drawn to the character.
"I don't know, I just felt ready to play a psycho," Gosling told MTV News, regarding what appealed to him about the role.
"What I was really focused on was making a violent John Hughes movie," he explained. "I love Pretty in Pink but I always wished there was some blood with the cotton candy.
"So when I met Nicholas, he had the same fantasy too, so we just tried to go down that road."
The film sees Gosling star opposite the likes of Carey Mulligan, Christina Hendricks and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston.
Drive was released in cinemas in the US this weekend and will premiere in the UK on Friday.
