Statham claimed that Killer Elite is "a bit more grown-up" than his roles in movies such as The Transporter series and The Expendables.
"This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time," he revealed to MTV News recently. "This is a thinking men's action movie.
"It's a bit more grown-up than things in the past I've done. In order to do movies like this I have to go through and do a few of those as well. There's a lot more going on."
Killer Elite stars Statham as a former special operations agent sent on a mission to save his mentor, played by Robert de Niro, who is being held captive by a military terrorist.
Statham added that both the film's impressive script and director Gary McKendry were big factors in convincing him to take on the project.
Killer Elite is due out in US and UK cinemas on September 23.
