Neil Patrick Harris has said that he enjoys taking on unusual projects like The Smurfs, because they broaden his appeal to audiences.

The How I Met Your Mother actor, who will also be seen in The Muppets later this year, explained that he enjoys both television and film roles.

"It's important as an actor to be as broad in your demographics as you can," Harris explained to
The Hollywood Reporter. "I'm grateful that I get to do Mother, which honours one big audience, but I'm also allowed the Harold & Kumar films and The Smurfs at the same time.

"That's the career I"ve been angling for - trying to hit on as many cylinders as I can without oversaturating my market."

Harris also revealed a wish to take on more serious, dramatic roles in the future.

"[I'd like to do] something hyper-dramatic like a Chris Nolan movie," he said. "My stuff tends to be more glib and comfortable casual acting. I don't do a lot of intense things."

Harris also commented on receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this week, describing the honour as "flattering".

The actor will next be seen in the new season of How I Met Your Mother, which returns to CBS on September 19.
