The Law & Order star claimed that Hudson has the "power" to convincingly portray Winnie Mandela in the forthcoming movie.
Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, he declared: "Jennifer has a power in her that is almost unseen, and you often times hear it in her voice.
"She's like that distant star that seems to shine brighter than our own sun, and I can't wait to see her performance."
Howard, who plays Nelson Mandela, added: "Fortunately for me I got to play Nelson as a 40-something-year-old man. When he was a boxer, when he was a dancer, when he was a bit of a ladies' man.
"Before he learned the gravitas of responsibility of a nation, when he began his guerilla war movement. A part of Nelson most people are unaware of. Before he learned how to walk on water."
