Rocketman is being produced by the legendary musician and his partner David Furnish's Rocket Pictures.
The pair are teaming with Billy Elliot writer and playwright Lee Hall on the film, which has been described as a musical fantasy that combines musical numbers with the real events of John's life, reports Deadline.
The film will go as far back as John's childhood, in which, at the age of 11, the piano playing prodigy won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.
"Rocketman will be a radically different kind of biopic," said Rocket Pictures' Steve Hamilton Shaw, who is producing the movie alongside Furnish.
"It will be as unique as Elton's life, told in a non-linear and hyper-visual manner that will transport people through the many intense experiences, some wonderful, some not, that helped define Elton as an artist, musician and man."
John and Hall previously collaborated on the Tony Award-winning stage adaptation of Billy Elliot.
There is currently no director attached to Rocketman.
