The original Thor was directed by Kenneth Branagh. However, in July it was announced that the 50-year-old had elected to step down from overseeing the highly-anticipated sequel in a decision that was said to be "mutual and amicable".
Sources close to the film have said that Jenkins is currently in negotiations to direct the Marvel Studios follow-up, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The 40-year-old has previously helmed the Charlize Theron film Monster, as well as the pilot for The Killing.
Earlier this month, Thor star Tom Hiddleston claimed that the sequel had yet to hire a director, confirming that Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk was among the contenders.
Thor star Kat Dennings recently revealed that she is unsure of whether she will return for Thor 2, admitting that she has yet to be asked back.
Thor 2 is scheduled to begin filming in April, with a release date planned for July 2013.
