Moneyball centres on Billy Beane's attempts to rebuild a baseball team using quantitative analysis.
Hill told NY Vulture: "There's nothing comedic, at least in my mind, about the part. I think there are sweet moments, but no jokes or wisecracks. Actually, my character has a pretty nonexistent sense of humour in a lot of ways.
"I knew after Cyrus, which was a good movie in my opinion, that I would get some opportunity to do more stuff."
Hill also revealed that he was cast in the role of the general manager after showing Miller Cyrus.
In the indie comedy, he stars as a new age musician who has a very close relationship with his single mother and is prepared to fend off the advances of other men.
Hill also added that Moneyball will mark him as an actor that can do serious roles as well as comedy.
"Bennett says that with Moneyball and this physical transformation, it's like saying, 'A, I did this movie that you didn't think I could do, and B, I did this thing with myself that you didn't think I could do.'
"So that's two very strong statements that I'm a serious person out there looking to do serious stuff," he said.
Moneyball co-star Brad Pitt has described the film as being about "social justice".
Hill has previously said that he had struggled to return to normal life after playing such an emotionally disturbed character in Cyrus.
The actor will next be seen in babysitting comedy The Sitter.
