Scott Westerfield novel Uglies will be given a big screen makeover by 20th Century Fox, Variety reports.
The story is set in a future in which youths are branded 'Uglies' until they reach 16 and are then surgically transformed in 'Pretties', allowing them to live in the posher part of town. The focus is on a girl who is told she will be denied the life-changing procedure unless she spies on a friend who avoided the operation and joined a group of rebels.
The first in a trilogy, the saga is continued in Pretties and Specials, the latter released earlier this year.
Producers John and Jordan Davis were attracted to the story when their daughter read it at school.
