Zac Efron has signed up to star in the new remake of Broadway musical Hairspray, according to Variety.
The actor will play Link, the heartthrob of The Corny Collins Show, alongside Nicole Blonsky in the new interpretation, which also features performances from John Travolta, Queen Latifah and Brittany Snow.
Efron's appointment has led to his trying to defer his place at USC, by which the 18-year-old was recently accepted.
Directed by Adam Shankman, the film begins work on September 5 and is slated for a summer 2007 release.
