Zemeckis will team with screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos on the adaptation of writer Peter Lenkov and artist Frazer Irving's graphic novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The book stars the real-life writer and researcher Charles Fort, who was known for his investigations into paranormal phenomena including levitation, teleportation and alien abduction.
Dark Horse's four-issue 2002 miniseries recast Fort as an adventurous hero, battling aliens and murderers in the streets of the late-19th century New York City.
Dark Horse's Mike Richardson will produce the film alongside Zemeckis and Imagemovers partners Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey. Dark Horse's Keith Goldberg will be an executive producer on the film.
Spiliotopoulos was previously rumoured to be writing the sequel to the comic book movie adaptation Wanted.
