The board game adaptation from director Peter Berg stars Kitsch alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Liam Neeson and singer Rihanna, but has been criticised over its premise.
"I don't see [the name] as baggage," Kitsch told MTV News recently. "It was never really a thing to be discussed.
"I love that people want to know more about it and so does Pete [Berg]."
The actor added that he had been excited to reunite with Berg, after working alongside the director on NBC sports drama Friday Night Lights.
Kitsch aded: "[Friday Night Lights] was just an incredible experience growth-wise as an actor on so many levels, so to re-engage with Pete and go into this grand scale and for us to have the freedom we had - you'll see it. We ran with that, put it that way."
Battleship will be released in cinemas on May 18, 2012.
