The Real Steel actor told MTV News that execs have been tempted to make a darker, more adult version of the comic book hero, though he confessed that they are hesitant to alienate younger fans.
"There's such great temptation to make an R-rated Wolverine. I've always felt that, and I know a lot of fans would like that," Jackman said. "If there's ever going to be a superhero that is going to be R-rated, it's going to be Wolverine."
However, acknowledging how popular the character is with younger fans, Jackman added: "You see it in their eyes. He's everything to them. You need to have a really good reason to exclude those fans."
Jackman recently claimed that he was inspired by Clint Eastwood's 1976 Western The Outlaw Josey Wales when creating his own version of The Wolverine.
He has promised that the film's script is close to Darren Aronofsky's original vision despite the director having pulled out of the project.
