The New Girl actress was first linked to the role in August 2006. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she confessed that she has been preparing for the part for the past few years.
"I've been working on her scratchy voice with a vocal coach for three years and now we've found out it just isn't going to happen," Deschanel said. "That's a lot of time to spend prepping for a movie."
Pink and Britney Spears were named as contenders for the part as early as March 2006. Meanwhile, Vanessa Hudgens had also previously expressed interest in portraying Joplin.
Last month, New Girl was ordered for a full season by Fox after a strong start in the ratings.
Deschanel has praised her New Girl character, revealing that she particularly appreciates her character's quirkiness.
