The Bop Decameron is to be renamed Nero Fiddled, The Wrap reports.
The Midnight in Paris director made the decision after he realised that few people knew about author and poet Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron.
"I couldn't believe how few people had heard of 'The Decameron', even in Rome," Allen said. "And the few that did assumed the movie was based on Boccaccio's tales, which it's not."
Nero Fiddled is a reference to the Roman emperor who stood by while the ancient city burned.
Allen famously renamed his break-out comedy Annie Hall because the original title was too complicated. He had named the film Anhedonia, which means "an inability to enjoy oneself".
Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Juno's Ellen Page star in the film, which sees Allen's first on-screen appearance since his 2006 film Scoop.
In July, the star of The Social Network said: "I'm more than anything just interested to see how [Woody Allen] works. The fact that I get to be in The Bop Decameron too is even more exciting."
