Producer Kevin Feige confirmed at New York Comic-Con this weekend that the studio will now begin working towards a potential Avengers sequel.
"[Iron Man 3] will be the first of what we sort of refer to as phase two of this saga that will culminate, God willing, in The Avengers 2," Feige said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Feige also confirmed that the superhero team-up film will likely have a post-credits scene hinting at the next phase, as has become tradition with Marvel Studios films.
"Its a nice tradition, and I like traditions, so I think we'll keep that up," he added.
Marvel released the first full trailer for The Avengers last week, which was downloaded over ten million times in just 24 hours.
The Avengers is scheduled for release in cinemas on May 4, 2012.
