Jason Statham has addressed rumours that he will be starring in the Transformers franchise.

The Expendables actor has been mentioned as a potential series lead, taking over from the departing Shia LaBeouf.

Speaking to MTV, the British action star claimed that rumours of his involvement sprung from online chatter.

He said: "You know, I don't know how those things start. You read them. Someone told me about it. [But] the internet is a dangerous place. There's a lot of stuff out there."

However, Statham refused to distance himself from a potential role in Transformers 4, adding: "I've got a lot of stuff in front of me, but Michael Bay is a talented man. This last one just made a billion dollars around the world, so people like his films. He's a talented man."

Transformers director Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg recently met with Hasbro and Paramount to discuss filming the fourth and fifth instalments back-to-back.
