Twitch Film claims that Oldman has been offered the role of the Colonel, while Bonham Carter is sought to portray Lady Miyako, but no decision has been made either way.
Tron Legacy star Garrett Hedlund has reportedly been tapped to take on the role of lead character Kaneda.
The Katsuhiro Otomo manga was previously adapted to film in the 1988 anime, which has gone on to become a cult classic.
Akira tells the story of biker Kaneda as he searches for best friend Tetsuo, who has been kidnapped by a government agency wishing to study his emerging telekinetic powers.
The live-action project was officially given the green light earlier this month, with Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra still attached to helm the film.
