The Damages actress is to be given the prize when the 23rd annual festival kicks off in January.
Harold Matzner, chairman of the Palm Springs International Film Festival, described Close as one of the most accomplished actresses of her time.
Matzner said: "Glenn Close has the gift of mesmerising an audience whenever she performs. Since her film debut in 1982 [in The World According to Garp], Close's ability to capture the essence of a character is unparalleled, be it a femme fatale, a notorious stalker or the trusted aide to a president."
Helen Mirren, Clint Eastwood, Cate Blanchett and Samuel L Jackson have received the festival's career achievement award in years past.
Close has earned five Oscar nominations and won three Emmy Awards over her storied career.
She will next appear on the big screen opposite Mia Wasikowska and Aaron Johnson in Albert Nobbs, which opens on January 27, 2012 in US cinemas.
