The movie brings together video footage shot all over the world by hundreds of ordinary people on July 24, 2010. So popular was the initiative, that Macdonald had to cut down 4,500 hours of video content into a 90-minute picture.
Macdonald told Digital Spy of making Life in a Day: "What surprised me about this movie is that I thought it was an experimental film. I finished it and I realised it's a very populist film, it's a film that anyone can enjoy. From a child - my own 8-year-old has seen it and loved it - up to an adult.
"It works like a traditional movie in that it's highly emotional. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, it makes you think."
