The Big Love star is currently in negotiations to helm a film version of the '70s TV series starring David Carradine, Deadline reports.
Paxton has previously directed two movies, Frailty and The Greatest Game Ever Played.
It is believed that the project will enter production next summer, with some location shoots in China.
The original TV series ran between 1972 and 1975 on ABC, and Carradine also reprised his role of Kwai Chang Caine in a film - Kung Fu: The Movie - in 1986.
In August, the actor signed up to appear in History's new miniseries The Hatfields and McCoys.
Paxton revealed earlier this year revealed that he was "relieved" upon the end of filming for the fifth and final season of Big Love.
He was reportedly unhappy with the series finale when he first read the script.
