The veteran actor and director told The Hollywood Reporter that DiCaprio is more interested in artistic fulfilment than big-budget blockbusters.
Eastwood said: "He could have made a lot of money just doing spectacle movies with all kinds of CGI, but he wants to vary his career, like I've always looked to vary mine as a director."
DiCaprio reduced his salary from $20 million (£12.6 million) to $2 million (£1.3 million), it has been reported.
Eastwood also confirmed that his planned remake of A Star Is Born, starring Beyoncé, will go ahead next summer once she has welcomed her first child.
J. Edgar - which marks the first time that Eastwood and DiCaprio have worked together - opens in US cinemas on November 9, and is released in the UK on January 20, 2012.
