The Once director has entered final negotiations for the drama, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Carell stars in the movie as a professor investigating the death of his wife. As their dog was the only witness to her mysterious death, he attempts to teach it to talk.
The film is based on Carolyn Parkhurst's acclaimed debut novel.
Carney is best known for his 2006 musical drama Once, which he followed up with Zonad and the supernatural drama The Rafters.
Crazy, Stupid, Love star Carell seems to have turned his attention to more serious projects. He was recently cast in Foxhunter, a film about the schizophrenic murderer John du Pont.
