The King's Speech star was reportedly offered the role of the film's villain, according to Twitch.
Oldboy is a remake of a 2003 Korean film from director Chan-wook Park. It centres on a man who has five days to get revenge after being imprisoned for 15 years for no discernible reason.
Josh Brolin will play the film's protagonist. Rooney Mara was offered the female lead, but she turned it down.
Firth recently admitted that he cannot remember his Oscar win, saying that the victory had "a slightly numbing effect".
In September, Firth joined the cast of The Railway Man, playing former British army officer Eric Lomax.
