Judd Apatow has suggested that the Academy Awards should create a separate category for comedy films.

The Knocked Up director and Bridesmaids producer confessed that he is frustrated by the lack of comedy features that receive Oscar nominations, insisting that the genre deserves its own separate category.

"If comedy is not included, ever - it's been like five times in a zillion years that it's won 'Best Picture' - then it doesn't seem like it's screwing up Schindler's List for Hangover to have its own category," Apatow told the Los Angeles Times.

Last week, the director tweeted his idea regarding a separate category for comedy films, adding that it would make the awards show more fun.

"Since comedies are rarely up for Oscars it does make sense to have a comedy category. It would just add more fun categories," the director wrote.

Apatow recently attended the wedding of Knocked Up star Seth Rogen, who wed his long-time girlfriend Lauren Miller at the Kunde Estate in Sonoma, CA.

Actor Paul Rudd revealed that he is frequently encouraged to gain weight when working with the director.
