The Young Adult screenwriter was signed by Universal in 2009 to turn the book series about identical twins with contrasting personalities into a movie.
Cody told Indiewire: "I want it to be wonderfully nostalgic. I want it to be to the '80s what American Graffiti was to the [early] '60s.
"I want it to be looking back on a really cool time and enjoying yourself and I want it to be glamorous and colourful and bubblegum and a feast for the senses. That's my plan."
Cody also will be making her directorial debut with the self-penned project Lamb of God, starring Russell Brand and Julianne Hough.
Lamb of God tells the story of a young religious conservative (Hough) whose faith is shaken after a plane crash. She goes to Las Vegas to live her life as a sinner.
The Help's Octavia Spencer recently joined the cast as a card sharp in Las Vegas.
