The Oscar-winning American actress has provoked a negative reaction from former politicians in the UK for her portrayal of the British Prime Minister.
Director Lloyd told The Hollywood Reporter: "People have been arguing about her for months and months, She certainly burns brightly as a still very divisive character."
Former Conservative MP Norman Tebbit wrote last week that Thatcher was "never, in my experience, the half-hysterical, over-emotional, over-acting woman portrayed by Meryl Streep".
Streep is supported in the film by Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher and Anthony Head as Geoffrey Howe.
