David Fincher has praised the original film adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The director confessed that he was surprised by the Swedish version of the Stieg Larsson novel, saying that the film excelled at condensing the book into a movie.

"I read it and thought, 'Holy God, how do you compress this into a movie?' I thought the original did a great job, given its [$15 million] budget," Fincher told USA Today.

"When you have that much, it's going to be limited in terms of the scope," he continued.

The director went on to say that he based his American adaptation of the novel solely on the book.

"It's a great movie," Fincher said "But we had to start with the book. That's the wellspring of everything."

Earlier this month, Fincher said that he does not believe his adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will get nominated for any Academy Awards, joking that the film features too much anal rape.
