The Oscar-nominated filmmaker has entered talks to take over the project following the departure of Bridesmaids director Paul Feig.
Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant will return for the third big-screen adaptation of Helen Fielding's literary character. Production is due to begin in early 2012, reports Deadline.
Feig, Fielding and One Day author David Nicholls have all worked on the script for the sequel.
Universal and Working Title reportedly believe that Cattaneo would bring a "British sensibility" to the film.
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004) took in more than $500 million (£315 million) at the worldwide box office.
