'Tyrannosaur' triumphs at British Independent Film Awards

Tyrannosaur has taken home three prizes at the 14th British Independent Film Awards.

Paddy Considine's drama study of rage and violence, starring Peter Mullan, won the 'Best Film' award ahead of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Shame, Senna and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Actor Considine won the Douglas Hickox award for best debut director, while Peep Show star Olivia Colman won the 'Best Actress' prize for her work in the film.

Michael Fassbender won the 'Best Actor' award for Shame, which follows his recent success at the Venice Film Awards.

Lynne Ramsay won 'Best Director' for We Need to Talk About Kevin, the film based on Lionel Shriver's 2003 novel about a school massacre.

Meanwhile, Vanessa Redgrave won 'Best Supporting Actress' for Coriolanus, Michael Smiley won 'Best Supporting Actor' for Kill List, and The IT Crowd's Richard Ayoade won 'Best Screenplay' for Submarine.

Ralph Fiennes was given the award for outstanding contribution to British film by an actor, while Kenneth Branagh took home the Variety award in recognition of focusing the international spotlight on the UK in his work.

Of the award, Branagh said: "It is very exciting and thrilling. It is very nice to have a prize that has the words 'variety' and 'independence' attached to it because it is what I like to pursue in my work and to be in an atmosphere that people say is the Christmas party for the British film industry."
