The Beginners star revealed that he is especially intrigued by relationships that exist between people, adding that he does not care whether those relationships are heterosexual or homosexual.
"In regards to the gay community and myself, I'm delighted, but I'm just interested in people and life," McGregor told Frontiers. "I'm interested in sexuality and sex, relationships and love and what makes us tick, and it doesn't matter whether that's heterosexual or gay romance."
He continued: "I've never really gone out to try to play a gay person, because I don't really believe you could do that, and if you did, it wouldn't be a very good portrayal of anybody.
"So I go out to play a person, and their sexuality is a part of what makes them up - of course, it's a very important part of what makes us up, but it's not everything - it's not," McGregor concluded.
In November, McGregor signed on to play a leading role in HBO's pilot adaptation of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections.
Over the summer, he revealed that he is not keen on shooting sex scenes, saying that he finds it especially awkward now that he is 40 years old.
