The actor will feature in JJ Abrams's movie sequel in a principal but undisclosed role, reports Deadline.
Benicio del Toro and Alice Eve have also been rumoured to be joining the returning cast for the follow-up film.
Eve is expected to be stepping into an original role in the film, while del Toro will play a villain, but not the original Star Trek II's Khan.
They will join the cast of the first movie in the rebooted Star Trek universe, which is headed by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.
Weller has had recurring roles in various television shows including Dexter, Fringe, 24 and Psych.
The Star Trek sequel is scheduled for release on May 17, 2013.
