Warner Brothers has confirmed that Heath Ledger will play The Joker in the next Batman film.
The Brokeback Mountain star will appear with Christian Bale in The Dark Night, scheduled to go into production in 2007. It will be the first appearance of The Joker in the series since Jack Nicholson's 1989 portrayal.
Director Christopher Nolan enthused: "Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale's Batman is going to be incredible."
