The composer was first reported to be collaborating on the film's soundtrack in June, working with Grammy winner T Bone Burnett. However, due to a scheduling conflict, Elfman has backed out of the highly-anticipated movie.
He will be replaced by James Newton Howard, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Howard has previously worked on films such as King Kong and Michael Clayton.
Burnett confirmed in August that Jennifer Lawrence, who plays protagonist Katniss Everdeen in the forthcoming film, had recorded a song for the Hunger Games soundtrack.
Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz and Stanley Tucci co-star in The Hunger Games, which opens in cinemas on March 23, 2012.
