The Carlos star has been listed among the contenders for the role in the highly-anticipated sequel after Benicio del Toro turned down the part.
Ramirez will purportedly test for the role via Skype over the weekend, according to Variety.
Jordi Molla is said to be auditioning for the part as well.
Del Toro was rumoured to be taking on the legendary role of Khan, though director JJ Abrams later denied the claims.
Abrams first confirmed that he was interested in casting del Toro in the forthcoming film in November.
The Star Trek sequel is scheduled for release on May 17, 2013.
