Legendary Pictures wants the actor for the role of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey in the movie, reports Deadline.
In 1947, Rickey hired baseball legend Jackie Robinson, a star of the Kansas City Chiefs who had been barred from the major leagues because of his race.
Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential, Mystic River) is writer and director on the long-gestating project, which has been developed in collaboration with Robinson's widow Rachel Robinson.
Robert Redford was attached to the role more than a decade ago, with a string of top actors rumoured for the part since.
Ford has also recently been sought for roles in Black Hats and Ender's Game.
Sir Ben Kingsley is also in talks to appear in the sci-fi adaptation Ender's Game.
